Welcome to my Cape Town Kirstenbosch Photo Gallery!
Kirstenbosch Gardens are definitely amongst the top 10 tourist attractions in Cape Town for many reasons, which I will try to show you in this gallery.
This pic is taken at the entrance to the botanical gardens, which are situated in Newlands, Cape Town, on the foothills of Table Mountain.
Kirstenbosch boasts a vast variety of fynbos, small shrub-like vegetation, much of which is found only in the Cape Peninsula. The gardens are well layed out and have a rich history, including a Victorian bath, called Lady Anne Barnard's bath. You can spend your time wondering through a criss-cross of paths which are seperated by stretches of inviting lawn - the ideal place to have a picnic. The gardens are on a slope, so there are good views as well.
Of course, if you like shopping, you will find the new visitor's center is well geared for you, with the usual assortment of souvenirs, t-shirts, mugs and the like. There's also a good conference and function venue at Kirstenbosch.
Once all the walking has worked up an appetite, it's time to hit the restaurant, which was destroyed by fire in the 80's, but rebuilt bigger and better!
Kirstenbosch is well geared for blind people. There is a braile trail, where railings and rope guide people along the park, and the signs have braile on the back, so information is readily available.
Lastly, Kirstenbosch Gardens is one of the favourite ways of accessing the Back Table of Table Mountain for hikes. Two excellent and well known routes start in the Botanical Gardens - Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine. Both work their way up the slopes of Table Mountain, and end on the back table, from which it is possible to access the Cable Way, McLears Beacon and other points of interest on Table Mountain.
